Mike Robinson was born on 3 November 1971 in Simonstown. His love for horses started at the early age of 9, when he was forced to have a riding lesson with his older sister.
He has played every discipline in the sport of horses but the love for horse racing started when he joined Mike Stewart at his yard in Noordhoek. He started off as a groom looking after three horses as well as taking them to the races, gallops and exercising them. He worked his way up the ladder from groom to stable employee and then assistant trainer.
Michael then went to do his National Service where he ended up at the SANDF Equestrian Unit in Potchefstroom where he qualified as an assistant equine veterinarian. He stayed in the military for five years and then joined the Mike Stewart yard permanently thereafter.
After three years with Mike Stewart, he joined the powerful Chris Snaith yard in Philippi where he worked for three years before joining the Plattner Racing yard with Chris Snaith. They had much success and trained many Group and listed winners.
After a year with Plattner he then joined the mighty Dennis Drier yard in KZN where he stayed on for nearly six years. There they had many winners as well as Group and listed winners. Dennis was champion trainer in KZN for many years that Mike was employed by Dennis. This was the backbone to which Mike learnt a great deal about working with clients, training and good horsemanship as well as stable management.
Mike then relocated back to the beautiful Franshhoek Valley where he got the fantastic opportunity to work for Gaynor Rupert at Drakenstein Stud. It was there that Mike took out his private trainer’s license and began his training career. Besides doing the backing of youngsters, he was training and rehabilitating horses that belonged to Drakenstein Stud.
After a very successful 6 years at Drakenstein Stud, Mike decided to do his own thing and relocated to his current yard in Philippi six years ago where he and his wife Luella have had much success.
They make a strong team as Luella is the daughter of Doug Campbell who trains privately in KZN. She has been brought up with horses since the day she was born and was the youngest rider to ever win a Ladies Race at Clairwood Race Course back in the day. Their knowledge of horses is huge and their motto is “Striving for Success” which they are definitely starting to achieve. Their daughter Caitlin is also part of the Robinson team and is already a staunch rider and supporter with a vast knowledge of breeding and pedigrees. She is definitely one to watch out for in the future.
